What is a stem cell and why are they so important?
Stem cell can be described as a “new cell supplier”. Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function.
For this reason, stem cells are used in the treatment of many diseases and also used for aesthetic applications.
Stem cell supported FUE at İstanbul Hair Institute
There 2 ways to get stem cells from a patient. One of them getting stem cells from fat:
First day. Under general anesthesia, our plastic surgeon takes 100 ccs (approximate a glass) fat from the patient with liposuction (generally from the hip).
At GMP certificated lab. mesenchymal stem cells are separated with special methods. Approximately 100 million cells are obtained and at least 5% of them are stem cells.
Second day. The patient prepared for FUE operation. Painless anesthesia applied and then the plasma that includes stem cells injected into the scalp (especially bald areas). And operation continues as a standard.
The other way is obtaining stem cell from hair follicles: it is also called hair fibroblast
Under local anesthesia, a plastic surgeon takes a small sample from hair follicles. Then at GMP certificated lab (there is only a lab in İstanbul that can make hair fibroblast), hair follicles stem cells are growing. But it takes a month to have 200 million stem cells.
Then stem cells are applied to a patient’s scalp.
How the stem cells affect hair? Is it really work?
When hair cells do not work well, the hair follicles stay in the resting phase for a long time and fall into the spill phase instead of the growth phase. Even hair follicles that are damaged over time die completely and baldness occur.
Stem cells provide new cell formation where they are and also supporting to heal damaged cells at the same time. Application of stem cells to the scalp, new cells support existing hair follicles and accelerate hair growth.
